The realization of a decarbonized society is one of the most critical issues for corporate management, and the role of the EHS (Environment, Health, and Safety) department in driving this is expanding. Traditionally, EHS was a defensive function focused on regulatory compliance and workplace safety. However, it is now being redefined as a proactive activity directly linked to strengthening a company's sustainability and competitiveness. Here, we will consider specific scenarios in which the EHS department can contribute to a decarbonized society.

First, is the promotion of improved energy efficiency and the introduction of renewable energy. Energy-saving measures in factories and offices not only lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions but also result in cost savings. Furthermore, the EHS department can take the lead in accelerating the transition to a decarbonized society by promoting the adoption of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

Second, is working to reduce emissions across the entire supply chain. Companies are required to manage not only their direct emissions (Scope 1 and 2) but also indirect emissions (Scope 3) from activities like raw material procurement and logistics. The EHS department collaborates with procurement and logistics departments and takes on the role of establishing systems to reduce environmental impact through cooperation with suppliers.

Third, is promoting behavioral change through employee education and awareness reform. The realization of a decarbonized society is impossible without every single employee being conscious of reducing their environmental impact in their daily work. The EHS department contributes to fostering a company-wide environmental culture by encouraging specific actions such as eco-driving, paperless operations, and waste reduction through educational programs.

Fourth, is the use of digital technology to visualize and manage emissions. By utilizing IoT sensors and AI analysis, energy usage and emissions can be monitored in real time, and points for improvement can be identified. The EHS department uses this data to provide strategic reports and improvement proposals to management.

Finally, the disclosure of information and ensuring transparency to external stakeholders is also important. Proactively communicating decarbonization efforts to ESG rating agencies, investors, and local communities can enhance a company's credibility. The EHS department plays a central role in the creation of sustainability and integrated reports and provides information that is directly linked to an increase in corporate value.

In this way, the EHS department is fulfilling a wide range of roles for a decarbonized society, from on-site improvements and management of the entire supply chain to information disclosure. Going beyond mere regulatory compliance, its presence is growing as a strategic partner that carves out the future of a company.
